It is a “competition” (versus “pageant”).

Participants are “candidates” (versus “contestants”).

There is a “panel” (versus “judges”).

Candidates are “earning a job” (versus “winning a title”).

They are “at the podium” (versus “on a pedestal”).

They are a “public servant” (versus a “queen”).

The candidate selected will have “a year of service” (versus a “reign”).
